Exploratory Meeting

The first meeting of “Malta Round Table” was held 21st March 1975.

The initial exploratory meeting that led to the formation of Round Table माल्टा was held at the Dragonara Hotel, St Julian’s at 7pm on Friday 21 March 1975, during which Frank Pattison outlined the history, principles, and international structure of the Round Table movement to prospective members. The meeting covered the aims and objects of Round Table, its non-political and non-sectarian nature, membership by invitation, meeting format, and the emphasis on fellowship and community service, drawing comparisons with Rotary and Lions while stressing Round Table’s autonomy and youthful character. Following the discussion, a motion proposed by Joe Scicluna to establish a Round Table in Malta was carried unanimously, with 15 members voting in favour, and a programme of further preliminary meetings was agreed to lead towards the formal founding and chartering of Round Table Malta later in 1975.

“It seems that only a few days have passed by since the foundation, but three months of hectic preparation for this Charter let time fly. 17 founder members and 8 friends joined. Our association is now a ‘cool’ figure of 62, with two Honorary Members. I can imagine that through joint efforts soon a third Table will be founded. Here in Malta there is enough space and interest which will help the RT Movement and our banner will flutter for years and years!”

    2020: “Healthy Growth”

Maltese Tablers returning from the RTIT Venice Carnival had to spend one week in quarantine, as they returned at the start of pandemic restrictions. With the peak of COVID-19 restrictions, many activities were held online. RTMT2 held their 40th Charter anniversary over Zoom; “Quarantine Online Wine and Dine”, with attendees wearing formal wear, and having pizza together, albeit remotely.

At the October AGM, the term of 2020–2021 was given the theme of “Healthy Growth”, using the slow COVID period to focus on areas that needed attention, such as a potential recharter of RT3, updated rules, understanding Round Table’s current purpose, and other foundational aspects that could allow the association to grow once the restrictions are lifted. “Healthy Growth” of the members was given importance, with Men’s mental health on the agenda of RTMT for the first time. The stigma of discussing the topic was broken with discussions at national and at table levels.

    2021: Dar il-Mejda, RT Wedding

During the first RTMT HYM in years, National President Christopher Mintoff ended the presentation with “One more thing”, announcing the acquisition of an Association clubhouse in Valletta, on a 15-year lease agreement. The property was named दार इल‑मेजदा.

      • December 2021: Start of Restoration Works

The National AGM in October was preceded by the National President’s wedding (for which a pin exists) and the EURO 2 numbers meeting was organised as a pre-tour. International Tablers could attend a week’s worth of fellowship, which was very welcome following Covid restrictions. During the AGM, the floor presented a motion to give the National President one more year to be able to complete the projects started by the National Council. One more year of “Healthy Growth”!
