Activities and Recognition
One of the most unique and enduring traditions of RT87 Pretoria is the “3 WAY LINK”, a triangular friendship between three clubs: RT87 Pretoria (South Africa), RT434 Neath (Great Britain), and the Cobram Barooga Apex Club (Australia). This tradition involves mutual visits and strong bonds between the members, who affectionately refer to themselves as “linkers” when taking part in these journeys. The tradition remains alive, with a Neath tabler completing the experience in February 2024 and a Pretoria member having done so in September of the previous year.
Club Logo Symbolism
The RT87 Pretoria logo resembles the front of a steam locomotive, with the RTSA rondel acting as the train’s nose. This design is more than just creative imagery — it reflects the club’s historic connection to Pretoria’s rich steam train heritage. Several former members were closely involved with Friends of the Rail, a heritage organization that operated for over 25 years in the city. The organization is dedicated to preserving and operating steam locomotives and offers excursions that allow passengers to experience a “living museum” on a 60-kilometer rail journey. RT87 Pretoria also owns a miniature steam locomotive, which in earlier years was used at charity events to entertain the public. This symbol of motion and heritage highlights the club’s deep ties to local culture, history, and community engagement.
