Association: Round Table Malawi

Category: Service Project
Service Name: Rural Borehole Water Project

With the generous support of donors and the dedication of its members, Round Table Lilongwe 32 implemented a high-impact service project across rural Malawi aimed at drastically improving lives in the Central Region. The initiative was delivered at a total cost of €70,000 for clean water, resulting in caring Through Community Service.

Addressing Poverty Through Access to Water

Malawi, one of the world’s poorest nations, faces numerous challenges. Over 50% of the population lives below the poverty line, with many unable to produce or earn enough to meet basic needs. Poverty is especially concentrated in rural areas, where communities rely on subsistence farming and increasingly unpredictable rainfall for survival.

Boreholes and Drip Kits: Supporting Rural Communities

In collaboration with local communities, Round Table Lilongwe 32 oversaw the drilling of 21 boreholes in the Central Region, primarily targeting rural villages with limited or poor-quality access to water. Of these, 19 boreholes were also equipped with drip irrigation kits, enabling year-round vegetable cultivation.

This initiative now provides safe and reliable water to over 12,000 people.

The boreholes have significantly reduced the daily burden of collecting water from distant or unsafe sources—a task traditionally carried out by women and children.

Additional benefits of the project include:

    • A reduction in waterborne illnesses, especially among children, will ease the burden on understaffed local clinics
    • Increased school attendance, as children are no longer occupied with water collection
    • Improved nutrition and food security through year-round gardening
    • Supplemental income opportunities from surplus produce

These results highlight the transformative power of community collaboration, volunteerism, and donor support.

“When we work together, even the smallest drops can create waves of change.”

Supporting Zoe Orphanage Foundation: Clean Water and Medical Aid

In addition to the village water project, Round Table Lilongwe 32 extended its support to the Zoe Foundation Orphanage in Area 25, Lilongwe. The Table provided a dedicated borehole that now delivers clean, plumbed water directly to the home, which houses 106 orphans.

Furthermore, Round Table donated medical supplies and anti-malarial medications, addressing the ongoing health challenges faced by the children. The orphanage’s founder, Temwa Chilenga, expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that access to clean water had been one of the facility’s greatest needs.

A Commitment to Community

These efforts reflect Round Table Lilongwe 32’s unwavering commitment to service and its belief in the power of collective action to create lasting, positive change.

Water is Life. Sanitation Gives Dignity.
