History of the Structure

Het Rabot is a historic fortified gateway located in Ghent, Belgium. Constructed between 1489 and 1491, it was built to strengthen the city’s defenses after Maximilian of Austria exploited a weak point to seize Ghent in 1488. The structure features two prominent towers and originally functioned as a sluice gate on the River Lieve, allowing the city to control water levels and defend against potential threats. Although Het Rabot is not open to the public, its impressive exterior remains a notable landmark, reflecting Ghent’s rich medieval history.
