Schwandorfer Schwanenrennen (Swans-Race)

Association: Round Table Germany

Main Website: Official Page

The Swans-Race is part of a broader tradition of charity races that involve floating toys in rivers, typically used to raise money through sponsorships and donations. What sets the Schwandorf version apart is the use of swan-shaped rubber toys instead of ducks, symbolizing grace and elegance, and offering a locally themed twist on the common duck race format based on the city’s name, “Schwandorf” which means “Swans-Town” in German. The event takes place on a side arm of the River Naab, near Schwandorf’s city center, and aims to support local charitable causes.

The event is organized by RT Germany 185 Schwandorf, the premiere event in 2025 marked a significant success, drawing large crowds and raising substantial funds for local charitable initiatives.

The Race

The main race in 2025 featured sold out    4,000 rubber swans, each individually numbered and “adopted” in exchange for a donation. The swans are released into the river and floated along the designated course with the current.

At the first race 2025 a total of 180 winning swans were identified at the finish line, with prizes awarded to those who adopted the corresponding numbers. Prizes were contributed by local businesses and sponsors, encouraging widespread participation from both residents and visitors.

Sponsor the Swans Race

In addition to the main event, a special race featuring 30 larger and individually designed sponsor swans was held 30 minutes before the official Swans-Race. These oversized swans, each branded and sponsored by a local business or organization, competed in a shorter but equally spirited race.

The winner of the sponsor race in 2025 was the swan sponsored by the City of Schwandorf, earning bragging rights among the participants.

Support and Logistics

The Schwandorf Fire Department played a crucial role in the execution of the event, providing machinery, manpower, and technical support to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the race.

Charity Impact

The 2025 Swans-Race raised over €25,000, which was directed toward local charitable causes.

Reception and Future Outlook

The inaugural Swans-Race received a warm reception from the public, sponsors, and the media. Its unique concept and festive atmosphere attracted significant attention and set the stage for it to become an annual highlight in Schwandorf’s community calendar.

Given the success of the first edition, organizers have expressed plans to repeat and expand the event in future years, potentially increasing the number of swans and diversifying the range of activities surrounding the race day.
