RT17 Tallinn Royal is a Round Table Estonia club established in Tallinn. The club held its first preparatory meeting on 17 September 2024, beginning the process that lead to its official chartering on 20th September 2025 at Tallinn TV Tower. The last Round Table Estonia charter had taken place on 15 May 2015 with the foundation of RT15 Tallinn. After a 10-year interval, the Estonian Tabling community expanded again with RT17 Tallinn Royal, bringing 6 new members into the association along 3 current active members — Aleksander Ottokar (ex RT5 Tallinn NORD), Karel Kesküla (ex RT14 Saaremaa) and Krister Vellet (ex RT6 Pärnu).
Origins and Concept
RT17 Tallinn Royal was created through international friendship and the aspiration to continue Round Table’s timeless fundamental values. The club’s guiding principle is to provide members with opportunities for personal growth, inspiring exchanges, guest speakers, and enriching experiences. It emphasizes a gentlemanly lifestyle and philosophy, positioning itself as a club where everyday life is elevated through memorable experiences.
The idea of establishing a “Royal” club in Estonia was inspired by international Round Table cooperation. The concept follows the model of RT Stockholm-Royal, a club founded in 1993/1994 in Sweden. Stockholm Royal was created by members who felt their existing clubs were overly formal and lacked emphasis on member development and inspiring activities. Its founders wanted to build a club where quality, enthusiasm, and meaningful experiences took precedence over mere numbers. Over its 30-year history, Stockholm Royal has demonstrated that a successful club does not depend on size but on the dedication and spirit of its members.
Based on this example, it was agreed that the first Royal-family club outside Sweden would be established in Tallinn as a pilot project. The Tallinn initiative aims to grow the membership base of Round Table Estonia while introducing fresh members to the movement.
Principles and Activities
RT17 Tallinn Royal operates on the values of the Royal club tradition, focusing on:
— High-quality Tabling experiences
— Personal development and inspiring exchanges
— Friendship and cooperation
— An inclusive, stigma-free environment
— Enriching everyday life through unique experiences rather than obligations
Symbolism and Rondel
The rondel of RT17 Tallinn Royal incorporates elements that connect Round Table heritage with Estonian cultural identity:
1. Tudor rose in the center of the crown refers to the movement’s founder Louis Marchesi and the first Round Table rondel, which depicted King Arthur’s round table with a central Tudor rose.
2. King Arthur’s round table represents equality among members.
3. Kalevipoeg, the hero of Estonian national epic, is depicted seated at the round table. The crown on his head was inspired by the 2017 artistic edition of the Kalevipoeg. The same crown motif decorates the edge of the table.
4. Three lions from the Estonian national coat of arms appear at the center of the round table, symbolizing readiness for action and vigilance in heraldry.
5. A crown with deer antlers placed above the round table refers to Estonia’s Viking-age heritage and closeness to nature. Although Estonia historically never had its own monarchy or crown jewels, local chieftains are thought to have been occasionally referred to as “kings” in analogy to Germanic tribes.
The overarching Royal symbol across such clubs is a crown placed above the traditional round table, signifying that members symbolically crown their everyday lives through experiences and fellowship found in the club.
