Club numbers are always allocated in ascending order within an Association. While seemingly arbitrary, it gives certain insights into the status and strength of an organisation. The number ends up becoming meaningful symbol for the club and members, being shown in logos and regalia.
Clubs with the same numbers meet up for Numbers Meetings, where the only common factors are Table spirit and having the same number.
Reusing Numbers
Over time, some clubs may fold, leaving a blank in the numbered list of tables. Associations have different ways of dealing with this issue.
Round Table Great Britain & Ireland leaves the number available for potential clubs recharting in the same area.
Round Table Italy does not reuse table numbers, unless a Table is rechartered in the same city.
Round Table Morocco has a policy of not reusing numbers once a club folds.
Round Table Germany is much more flexible with its available numbers. Once a number is no longer used, after for 2 years the number becomes available to the next charting club. This allows clubs to connect with numbers meetings that would otherwise have no RT Germany representation.
Association Numbering Oddities
Since Round Table Seychelles and Round Table Mauritius were part of the same association, Round Table Indian Ocean, a unique situation emerged after it split. Round Table Seychelles consisted only of even-numbered clubs, while Round Table Mauritius consisted only of odd-numbered clubs. This quirk has become a staple of the associations and remains the case today. These two associations will never have their clubs meet at Numbers Meetings.
Round Table Malawi has three clubs, numbered 20, 32, and 69. This is because these clubs were once part of a much bigger Association, Round Table Central Africa. Similarly, Round Table Zimbabwe kept the same numbers after the split.
On the other hand, when 13 (tbc) clubs left RT Central Africa to form Round Table Zambia, they renumbered all their clubs, such that they numbered from 1 upwards. Likewise, Round Table Botswana renumbered its clubs, with 26 Gaborone becoming 1, 61 Orapa becoming 2, 62 Jwaneng becoming 3, and 64 Gaborone becoming 4.
“Unlucky” Number
Members in RT Philippines consider themselves to be a meeting point between Eastern and Western cultures. As a result, numbers 4 and 13 are both considered to be unlucky numbers and will not be used as club numbers.
