The 44th Ladies Circle International conference, which opened in Malta on September 4, 2003, has attracted 600 delegates from 27 countries.

It is the first time the international conference has been held in Malta since the local Ladies Circle was set up 21 years ago by wives of Round Table Malta members.

The main aim of the conference, being held at the Corinthia San Gorg, is for women from different cultures, races and religions to meet up, exchange ideas and raise money for worthy causes in one weekend.

One of the community service projects that is running at the moment is a rehabilitation programme in Zambia, where a paediatric ward was refurbished at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.

Babies and children who are suffering from malnutrition, or are HIV positive, are nursed back to health, while their mothers are taught how to feed and care for them properly.

The conference was inaugurated by Social Policy Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who addressed a colourful audience — delegates wore their national costumes.

The conference, which closes on Sunday, is being chaired by Ladies Circle International president Ashwini Surendar from India. It has been organised by a 12-woman committee from Ladies Circle Malta, who prepared a varied programme of business meetings, social occasions and sightseeing opportunities, as well as a courtesy call on President Guido de Marco by the LCI president and board last Tuesday.
