Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Located in the southern part of the country along the Maritsa River, Plovdiv is renowned for its rich history, diverse cultural heritage, and vibrant arts scene. The city is especially famous for its well-preserved Roman ruins, including the Ancient Roman Theatre, Roman Stadium, and forum.

Today, Plovdiv blends history with modern life. The Old Town features cobblestone streets, colorful 19th-century houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, and numerous museums and galleries. In 2019, Plovdiv was named the European Capital of Culture, highlighting its role as a cultural and creative hub in the Balkans.

The young Round Table Club was only founded in 1999, yet has already left an impact on its community, as well as Round Table internationally by hosting two regional meetings.

Club Logo Symbolism

The center of the Club logo features seven hills and a river, symbolizing the natural elements that shaped the identity and strategic importance of Plovdiv.

Plovdiv was originally founded on and around seven hills, known locally as tepeta. These hills offered natural fortification and strategic vantage points, making the area an ideal location for ancient settlers.

The Maritsa River (Марица) runs through Plovdiv and has historically played a vital role in the city’s development. It supported trade and transportation (especially during ancient and Ottoman times), agriculture, and strategic positioning, all of which contributed to Plovdiv’s significance as a regional center.

Zlatyu Boyadzhiev Permanent Exhibition

Zlatyu Boyadzhiev (1903–1976) was a renowned Bulgarian painter known for his expressive portraits and vivid depictions of rural life. His work is notable for its transformation in style after a stroke in 1951, which led him to paint with his left hand in a more surreal, detailed manner.

The Permanent Exhibition of Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, housed in the Old Town of Plovdiv, showcases his life’s work—featuring both his early classical style and his later, more complex compositions. The collection offers a unique insight into his artistic evolution and lasting impact on Bulgarian art.

One prominent piece is found hanging in the middle of a large room at the first floor of the exhibition. This painting is from Boyadzhiev’s later period (post-1951), where he often depicted everyday rural scenes and villagers. He created several works featuring figures traveling or portrayed with animals, though not all are catalogued with titles. This painting was restored and framed with funds donated by Round Table 3 Plovdiv. A plaque at the bottom of the painting commemorates this contribution (РЕСТАВРИРАНА И РАМКИРАНА С ПОМОЩТА НА РАУНД ТЕЙБЪЛ 3 ПЛОВДИВ). As a benefit, members of the club may visit the exhibition for free.
