This is the club that understands basics and values on Round Table. A member of RTEE5 Tallinn Nord, recalls how the club set a common goal prior to winning the RTEE Club of the Year title in 2023.

In the summer before the season started, RTEE5’s board gathered for a pre-season planning meeting. Everyone was asked to think about what they would like to achieve in the coming year. The table was bursting with ideas. It became clear that even completing half of them would result in an awesome season for the members. From that discussion came a proposal: rather than just talk, let’s set a tangible goal — to pursue the RTEE Club of the Year award. This would give direction and purpose to all their efforts.

At the opening meeting of the season, this goal was officially voted in. From then on, all club activities were planned with this aim in mind. One requirement was that every brother actively attend meetings. Attendance percentages were tracked, and members who seemed at risk of falling behind were encouraged to re-engage. The result wasn’t perfect, but the club improved its attendance rate by about 20% compared to previous years.

Key Strategies Behind the Success

1. Stronger Internal Engagement: Members were encouraged to be more present at meetings, and attendance tracking helped drive up participation.

2. Cross-Club and Event Visits: A target was set for every member to visit at least one other RTEE club and one national event. By season’s end, they had achieved this. RTEE5 members were present at every single RTE event from September onward, often in groups.

3. Organizational Activity: Despite many members being involved in organizing RTI HYM 2023 Tallinn, Estonia and the club’s annual “Otsa School” tradition, they added more:

    • A pop-up New Year’s party
    • The RTEE Disc Golf Championship, which they reactivated

4. Stronger Club Brotherhood: As part of a 3‑year internal strategy, the club started organizing monthly “Sunday Gatherings”, where brothers and their families came together for shared activities. By the end of the season, they had significantly strengthened their internal unity and contribution to RTEE. As the AGM 2023 began, they already felt like winners. Winning the Club of the Year title was just the cherry on top.

Club Projects and Traditions

RTEE5 is best known for the annual charity concert-competition for young talented musicians named after Georg Ots. It showcases the instrumental and vocal talents of students from MuBa (formerly G. Ots Music School).

In the 2022/2023 season, RT5 revived the RTE Disc Golf Championships, which have now taken place five times.

You wouldn’t be far off in describing RTEE6 Pärnu as the free spirit among Round Table Estonia clubs. A club that is drawn to what’s fun and voluntary, and decidedly uninterested in anything boring or obligatory. This means the club is fiercely loyal to its traditions, such as organizing and promoting Kalapäevad (Fish Days), visiting old tablers on December 31st, delivering long and short reports, and maintaining the “Jug of Sins” (patukann). At the same time, their meetings might resemble a village fair more than the academically structured sessions seen in other clubs.

New guests might be surprised by the club’s €10 penalty unit. However, the president issues fines only for serious breaches and what qualifies as “un-tablerlike behavior” is entirely up to each year’s president.

Signature Tradition – Kalapäevad (Fish Days)

RTEE6’s most iconic tradition is the annual Kalapäevad event, which dates back to the club’s early years. Held in mid-February, it’s one of RTE’s most well-attended events. Participants enjoy crisp winter air and a sizzling party that runs into the early morning hours. The highlight? An exquisite seafood spread that even non-fish lovers can’t resist.

Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city by population, has a rich and dignified history. As a fun introduction: in the early 13th-century Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, Tartu is mentioned under names like Tarbata and the German version Dorpat. Historical records suggest that the city name may have originated from the Curonian Livonian word tarabos or taraab, meaning hazel tree. Other theories connect the name to the Norse god of thunder, Thor. For a time, it was believed that the name came from the supposed chief deity of ancient Estonians, Taara—a claim now heavily questioned. In the 1840s–1850s, early creators of Estonian pseudomythology, F. R. Faehlmann and F. R. Kreutzwald, claimed that the Tharapita mentioned in Henry’s Chronicle was a reflection of Taara. However, the line between invented mythology and authentic folk heritage is blurry, and there is no concrete evidence that ancient Estonians ever worshipped a god named Taara.

Nevertheless, during the Russification period, when the city was officially renamed Jurjev, Estonians began to refer to Tartu as Taaralinn (City of Taara) to avoid using the Russian name. Linguists and historians today, however, find the most convincing theory to be that of linguist Paul Alvre (1921–2008), who proposed that Tartu derives from the word tarvas—the aurochs, or wild ox. Such animal-based toponyms were common in the Finno-Ugric language area.

For the romantics and dreamers, the nickname Athens on the Emajõgi persists—linking the Emajõgi River with the source of wisdom, and Athens with the birthplace of classical European culture, education, and science.

University Town and Round Table Roots

Unavoidably, most associate Tartu with Estonia’s oldest university, founded in 1632. Interestingly, the idea for forming RTEE3 Tartu sprouted thanks to Swedish Tablers scouting the city through the university to find young, active men.

RTEE3 Tartu’s charter date, marking its full Round Table membership, is 10 November 1990. The godparent club is RTSE51 Uppsala, Sweden. As also mentioned in the “From Zero — RTE” documentary, while Finnish Tablers focused on founding RTEE1 and RTEE2 in Tallinn, the Swedes were actively recruiting in the then-closed town of Tartu. The result: Tartu became home to Estonia’s third Round Table club.

Distinguished RTEE3 Members

Among RTEE3’s most recognized members is Jüri Kulbin, known as JFK — an RTEE Past President, past IRO, and Tabler of the Year 2013, also awarded with the Honorary Medal by Round Table International for his contributions to the movement.

Traditions and Events

RTEE3 is closely associated with the RTEE Hunting Days, where brothers gather in the forest to pursue game together. Another club tradition is a sporting challenge in Racketlon against the brothers of RTEE10 Pärnu.

Reflecting on the RTEE documentary “From Zero – RTE” premiered on 12 November 2022, we gather from memories that today’s RTEE 1 might just as well have become RT Estonia 2 Tallinn. Also, even a club from Tartu had a chance to become RTEE 1, had events taken a different turn. It’s known that both Finnish and Swedish Tablers brought the spirit of Round Table to Estonia around the same time. Still, “what if” is a tricky road. The title RTEE 1 and the unofficial status as Estonia’s flagship club belong to Tallinn’s oldest Table, which for the past 35 years has actively carried the values and principles of Round Table and set an example in tradition and innovation for others to follow.

RTEE 1 is known for:

    • A consistently high number of active members.
    • Strong succession and recruitment.
    • Club nights that attract not only members but guests from other Tables.
    • Frequent meetings with 20+ attendees — often requiring seating limits!

Legacy and Contribution
